Florida family chooses San Buenas Golf Resort as Their New Home
My career as a commercial airline pilot, working for PanAm and later Delta Airlines, gave me the opportunity to travel all over the world and live in two European countries. After retirement we moved to a golf club community in Florida so my wife and our daughter, could play golf every day - which they both loved.
Soon after retiring I got an itch to buy a residence in a foreign country. We searched many possible locations and eventually decided on Costa Rica. But where in Costa Rica? San Jose is a large cosmopolitan city with all facilities and an interesting history and culture, but as in any large city has crowding and congested traffic problems.
The southern zone of Costa Rica is about a 3 hour drive away from all that. Being rural, but with necessary facilities such as, shopping, medical, hospital and a planned/approved international airport, it moves at a slower, friendlier pace.
The Costa Ballena on the southern Pacific Ocean coast has numerous beautiful beaches, nature parks and small hotels and restaurants. We enjoy the temperature ranges of 78F to 88F year round, and the daytime and nighttime are about the same length.
Our research led us to San Buenes Golf Resort where we bought a two bedroom, two bath condominium. It is a great condo design, constructed by Robert Fraser. It came fully furnished with modern appliances, solid teak woodwork everywhere - including the ceilings!
The spectacular swimming pool is just a short walk away.
The SBGR golf course, has 9 completed holes so far, and is spectacular and challenging. It is set in a lush rainforest surrounded by hilltops in the clouds.
Our daughter is able to continue studying online for her golf scholarship and play as often as she wants!
The local Costa Ricans, “Ticos”, are friendly and helpful, but only a few speak English, so we are studying Spanish, a beautiful language.
We have made many new friends, both expats and Ticos. There also is an active expat community in this southern area which adds to a pleasant retirement experience.
